Is yoga important in modern life? Absolutely. It is a discipline that unites the mind and body when practiced. In the fast-paced world we live in, taking time for oneself is a luxury that many haven't achieved. Slowing down and focusing on proper breathing is key to longevity.
Personally, I have experienced the benefits of practicing yoga in my daily life. It has been my prescription for finding calmness and has also acted as medicine to strengthen my mind and keep me present in the "now" moment.
One of my favorite yoga practices is the "Sun Salutations," also known as Surya Namaskar. It provides a great full-body workout and can be compared to high-intensity interval training (HIIT). I start my mornings with a few rounds of Surya Namaskar to warm up and prepare for other yoga postures. I strive to hold the end positions for as long as I can. I conclude my practice with slow and deep breathing exercises, and I'm ready to tackle the day.
It's best to practice yoga on an empty stomach, making mornings ideal. Consistency in practice can bring about tremendous benefits and help you adopt a healthy lifestyle. After practicing yoga for many years, it has become an integral part of my life. I sleep better, experience fewer hunger pangs, have improved focus, and enjoy great flexibility.
I consider myself fortunate to have been born in India, the birthplace of yoga, where it originated five thousand years ago. Yoga is now widely recognized and practiced in many parts of the world as a way of living a fulfilling life.
Now, let's explore the origin of yoga.
Yoga dates back to ancient times, specifically BC. It was practiced during the early stages of Indian civilizations. Maharshi Patanjali, known as the "Father of Yoga," systematized the practices and disseminated the knowledge yoga has to offer. He formulated Astanga yoga, also known as the eight limbs of yoga.
Yoga spread to the West in the mid-nineteenth century, during which Vedanta, Bhakti, and Hatha yoga flourished. Today, there are numerous training programs worldwide to teach this ancient discipline, which helps us "master our minds" through meditation, pranayama (breathing techniques), and asanas (physical postures).
