What is sustainability? Sustainability means meeting our own needs without comprising future generations' abilities to meet their own needs.
Thidera has been continually committed to supporting sustainability via various environmental initiatives. Earth Day being one of which we take great pride in recognising and celebrating year after year.
Earth Day is an annual global event when more than 1 billion people support protecting the planet in various ways from things such as pollution and deforestation. For Earth Day 2023, we need to act boldly, innovate broadly, and implement equitably. Citizens, businesses, and governments all need to be accounted for and everyone should be accountable as we work together in partnership for the planet.
With this in mind, Thirdera has chosen to partner with OneTreePlanted, a non-profit organisation dedicated to reforestation on a global level to restore forests, create habitat biodiversity and make a positive social impact around the world.
As we did last year, we are planting a tree for each of our employees - over 900 tribute trees to be exact. We have chosen to plant these trees in the Amazon Rainforest.
The Amazon Rainforest is the largest tropical forest in the world. It extends for 2,100,000 square miles across nine countries, covering 40% of South America. Demographically, it is home to 400 indigenous tribes, 60 of which live in total isolation. From a biodiversity perspective, it houses over 3 million animal species, with over 100 new ones still being discovered every year. Additionally, it houses 2,500 plant species that not only have invaluable uses in modern medicine but also play a critical role in climate regulation due to their capacity to store between 90 to 140 billion metric tons of carbon. This is why the Amazon Rainforest has been dubbed “the world’s lungs.”
Constant resource exploitation and deforestation have caused the degradation rate of the Amazon’s woodland to increase by a thousand-fold in the last 50 years. Paired with the constant interference of human activities, almost 1 million of its indigenous species are facing extinction with 17% of its forest cover lost.
We need to protect the Amazon Rainforest mainly because of the disastrous impact the release of even a small portion of its CO2 reserves would have on the world’s climate. The disappearance of its woodland will also bring about the extinction of 10% of the world’s biodiversity, as well as the cultural loss of all the native tribes that rely on its resources to sustain themselves.
Our team at Thirdera is committed to continuing to plant more trees over the years to help the environment. Check out this Earth Day website for some ideas on the ways to support the environment.
Happy Earth Day!
